Blogging in the middle of the week?! While at school? Yes, I am being a little extravagant, I'll admit. This is unusual for me. But... I really have no choice.

Hello friends.

Somebody has been a very bad blogger! Sometimes my life simply gets in the way of blogging. The first few weeks back at school are always a transition for me. It's a bit of a shock to the system to go abruptly into highly scheduled days from lounging around. But- it has been good to get back into the swing of things again; to be productive.
Speaking of productive, I can't help but mention this lovely little film of the brilliant man behind the The Sartorialist blog. I love it - SO inspiring.

This term I am taking a field production class, where I am learning how to film, produce and edit. Let's just say that my first little piece was a LONG ways from looking like the above film. But... someday, right?!

Here's a few highlights of my Christmas Eve: delicious sparkling cider, spending a good portion of the day cooking and baking goodies (such as sweet potatoes, breakfast souffle, and pumpkin pies), "sibling" presents under the tree, and a cake to celebrate Jesus' birth! Such a good day. Now I must leave to eat more candy and pie, watch a movie and wrap some forgotten presents...

These past few days of sleeping in, eating peanut-butter-chocolate-covered-cookie-goodness, watching Christmas movies and baking sugar cookies, have been a bit more than I can take. Christmas in Connecticut. This Christmas movie with Barbara Stanwyck is one of my most FAVORITE movies of all time - it's hilarious and sweet and of course very Christmasy.

Here's a BRIEF summary: It is about a magazine author who pretends, for her articles, to be a married home-maker, but in reality she is a single who lives in a little NY flat... and YOU HAVE TO SEE IT to find out how it ends.

I love LOVE love Christmas. Today I finished up Christmas shopping with my little brother. We braved the malls and let me just say - WOW. I am so glad I only had a few presents left to buy because it is CRAZAY out there, crazy. And so many ridiculously GOOD sales! I had to refrain multiple times from buying myself early Christmas presents...
Anywho, this evening I took a few festive pictures of my parent's home to help get ya'all in the holiday spirit!

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!
It feels so lovely to write a blog post with no deadlines looming over my shoulder. And it has been beyond amazing to sleep in, listen to Christmas music 24/7, bake peanut butter balls and Christmas gift-shop with my little brothers. Christmas is, without a doubt, my most favorite time of the year. While on break, I had plans to be uber-productive and begin blogging daily - but, that hasn't happened quite as I had planned. Somewhere between Christmas shopping with my Mom and taking the time to read for pleasure for the first time since summer, I decided to just let myself take a deep breath and hibernate intellectually for a week. Blogging, I think, should be more of an organic, natural and impulsive thing. Where you have a desire to share something, and so you do. Some of my recent posts were more than a little boring as I was struggling to juggle a fashion blogging assignment for school along with everything else in my life, and I hate to see that I gave a less-than 100% effort on those posts, and that they weren't the very best that I could do.
Anywho, I have made the new rule for myself to throw out ALL rules and plans as regards to blogging. OKAY. The END. I hope that this makes sense - it's mostly a random collection of my thoughts at the moment. Merry Christmas and BLESS you if you've read this entire post! Since it's getting closer and CLOSER to the Holidays- which I am eagerly awaiting - I don't know if I have ever been quite this ready for Thanksgiving and Christmas to arrive! I love everything about the holidays - seeing all my family, eating my mom's delicious potato casserole and pistachio salad, watching Macy's thanksgiving day parade and Home Alone, and basking in the contagious excitement that my little brothers have (for the time being!) for the holidays. Such a special time!

Anyways, I think now is a perfectly reasonable time to start my Christmas wishlist.

And since it's mostly clothes, this is the most appropriate place to share it!

I don't know about you, but when I feel sick, fashion is not really a concern. Today I felt incredibly awful, so I wore a mis-matched outfit that included yoga pants, a blue zip-up and a giant scarf that I wrapped about 7 times around my neck 'til I looked as if I was wearing a neck-brace. It was so comfortable. And quite attractive, I'm sure.

I can't be bothered with fashion when sickness and stress collide in my life, mmkay?!

And so, today's "fashion post" has not much to do with the critique of trends and fashion. In fact, it's quite the opposite.

So, when you are sick: feel free to wear whatever the heck you want, my friends!

One of my most favorite parts of the fall season is wearing sweaters.

And I am absolutely head-over-heels in love with over-sized menswear sweaters. In fact, I just perused Goodwill today, and came home with a darling $3.99 soft green over-sized sweater. Yes, it was a pretty stellar find, so you can be jealous. Hehe, just kidding.

And speaking of sweaters, Urban has a lovely and relatively affordable (not as affordable as the $3.99 finds from Goodwill!) selection. And these three are my favorites.

I've noticed the resurgence, the sudden appearance, the unhappy comeback... of maxi-length skirts.

As of right now, my thoughts are slightly up in the air, but the one word that comes to mind? Ew.

It just feels a bit too much like a costume and way too much early 90's. I'm just NOT feeling it. Sorry.
I'm sure at some point I will come around, and start wearing "Little House on the Prairie"-esque skirts... But I'm not quite there yet! Sometimes fashion trends are a hard sell!
Thoughts? Would you give this trend a thumbs up? Or a BIG FAT thumbs down?

This fall, I am loving big chunky sweaters and leggings. And TONS of layers with enough contrasting patterns/colors/ designs to feel a bit eclectic. So fun! Autumn is by FAR my favorite time of the year.
And while most of my favorite sweaters at the moment are from thrift stores like Goodwill or Teen Challenge, I feel like Rag & Bone captures this look so beautifully. I mean, a girl can dream, right?! And at the very least, this is lovely inspiration for my own closet!

Meet Stephie!

Quick Facts: She is a Junior at Oregon State University, originally hailing from Beaverton, Oregon, where she was the youngest half of five children.

Wait, half? Say what?! Yes, She has a fraternal twin sister named Ruthie. They both live at an all-girls co-op called House of Charis.

Oh, and this twin’s major?! Interior Design with a Merchandising Management minor.

“I wanted to do something where I could be involved and work with weddings, ” said Stephie.

Originally, she wanted to do event planning – BUT-because of the business minor she changed her mind as she realized that she didn’t want to own her own business.

So Stephie did what every other college student does an average of a gazillion times, and changed her major.

“I changed to merchandising management! And even if it’s not a career for me - it doesn’t matter, because I love it!”

“I like being creative and fun crafty little things.- and so I thought that it would be a fun major for me. I would love to design weddings, and even if it doesn’t turn into a career for me, that’s okay.”

This term, Stephie is taking a fantastic conglomeration: beginning with “Building and Construction Materials”.

“It’s really boring for me… but it’s required .. so.. yeah.” Resignation is the mark of a seasoned student, my friends, and Stephie owns this one. She is also taking a couple more “blah” classes: Art History and Design.

Stephie’s face brightens when she mentions her last class.

“I am taking textiles, which is my absolute favorite class.”

Speaking of classes, shall we ask Stephie where she finds her best design and fashion inspiration? Blogs maybe?

“I love blogs. I LOVE blogs!” Yes. I love to hear that. It's all about the blogs BABY!

“And actually, a website that I actually have been going to a lot is glamour.com.” Good Choice Stephie!

"My favorite magazine is Vogue… It’s more like inspiration for things that I want to do. I feel like I just get inspired, and a lot by what I see other people wearing and then I get inspiration for how I could wear it and use my stuff and pull together something cool. AND I love the whole Vintage thing – like Victorian style… that’s what I LOVE,” emphasized Stephie.

Favorite era?

"I don't know if it's necessarily an era... but I love the Audrey Hepburn time… like the 40’s glamour….”

Favorite trend right now?

“I love the look of headbands, and braids, and what I am trying to do (since I am poor, and I don’t have a lot of money to invest in trendy clothes) is I love like making headbands and fun things like that, because I feel like small details like that can totally dress up and change the tone of your outfit.”

“Oh, and I LOVE Flats. And sparkly things."

And yes, that is the actual name of the coat.

And, I was super excited to find a MUCH cheaper version of the above Free People coat at Forever21.

Well, I've began fall term here at Oregon State University, and it's good to be back!

It's been a bit of a transition to be thrown back into the demanding school schedule, with assignments beginning immediately- yikesabee! - (has anyone seen "Win a date with Tad Hamilton"?) but it's good for me. I believe I function best under pressure.

So, that said, I have just been assigned a blogging exercise by one of my new media profs! And I am excited.
I have chosen to write about one of my loves: FASHION babayy. And I have decided to use this blog as a platform for this assignment instead of creating a new one solely for this project.

I am excited/grateful to be able to incorporate blogging into my schoolwork. Such drudgery... NOT!

Recently my friend and I were laughing about the fact that most of what I have posted on my blog so far has been about my little brothers. I have spent alot of time with them this summer and they are willing to be subjected to endless picture-taking, and they have little to no shame when it comes to ... anything and everything. As a college student with... very limited funds... I am of course a HUGE fan of Target. LOVE LOVE LOVE Target.

And so I was pretty stoked when I jumped on the Target website to monitor the price of the boots that I have had my eye on for quite a few months, and WHAT?! Target is having a ginormous boots sale people! So I thought I'd share the love for all the other broke and style-hungry out there.

These are the two pairs that I'm ordering... and even though these might not be on the cutting edge of boot trends... I LOVE them. I'm still not 100% sold on the military-esque boot look... are you?

Sooo, today I decided to play along with Lauren's "Fill in the Blank Friday"! So, get ready, because I am sure you are so syched to read this...

1. The most adventurous thing I've ever done is... I am not adventurous! AT ALL. But, I did cut bangs on Monday... I never EVER change up my hair, so I would say that is pretty adventurous for me!

2. If I were a pair of shoes I would be... Oh goodness - I am so bad at these self-analysis/symbolic questions. I think I will go with the burnt orange flip-flop style sandals with a suede fringe I have been wearing all summer. It symbolizes my American Indian roots! haha :)

3. My preferred mode of digital communication is... Well, normally talking on the phone, but right now my phone is broken so that I can only have a conversation if it's on speaker... which is super fun when everyone around you can hear your entire conversation. So at the moment - texting I guess!

4. I feel happiest when... I am surrounded by people I love.

5. A little dream I have for my life is... to eventually freelance and be able to have freedom to travel/work from home, etc.

6. The one modern convenience I could NOT do without is... the INTERNET babaay!

7. Music, movies, TV or books. If I could only choose one to enjoy I would pick... well it totally depends on my mood. I really haven't watched too many movies lately... but I have been listening to TONS of music on grooveshark.

survival of the dentist

I survived another trip to the dentist!
And I'm so GLAD it's over. Because I am so paranoid about having people in my face, I hadn't been to the dentist since 2008. Oopsies.
But apparently many people claim that going to the dentist is their number 1 fear. That's what my Mom told me, and so I'm not asking questions - I'm going with it!
But I am happy to report - still no cavities. Yes, I've never had a cavity. And - SHOCKING - I don't floss, which the new dentist was very grieved to hear, I could tell. He also was very concerned that I hadn't been to the dentist for two years.
But, I think I redeemed myself, because he beamed and gave me a high-five when the hygienist informed him I'd never had a cavity. Which was funny and a little awkward to maneuver since I was lying in the dentist's chair at a gravity-defying angle, blood rushing to my head.
Speaking of blood... these days they take your blood pressure - what's that about? I thought this was the dentist. Next their going to throw me on a scale. Jeez.
Anyways, the hygienist informed me that my blood pressure was a little high, but that's to be expected if I was a little nervous.
"Nervous?", I replied. "Oh yeah." I am really nervous. Nervous because you're going to fillet open my gums with your torture floss!

My little brother, Jonathan, is 6 years old.
I think...
It's hard for me to keep track sometimes... I have five brothers, and I can barely keep track of their birthdays, much less ages.
I laughed forever last night when I overheard this little boy invent a brand new word combination. In the middle of a long story, he used the word "be-cept". Like besides + except = "be-cept".
Um, haha GENIUS!
He is pretty full of it.... but such a sweet, thoughtful, and hardworking little man, too. I could pretty much talk about the terrible and sweet and hilarious things he does. all. day. long.
And even this photo is an example of him being a stinker and refusing to open his eyes, and not telling me his little plan til after the fact.
And he thought it would be pretty funny to repeat this little trick (of pretending to smile and then shutting his eyes right when I snapped the picture) ... 3 times in a row... haha. But it all worked out - because this picture makes me laugh every time - I love it!
So here he is. Eyes shut. Be-cept don't let the angelic face deceive you!

precious Friday morning routine

So, I know this post is a complete departure from everything I said this blog was going to about. Like fashion, food, people I love, or actually know... Haha, oh well.
I just have to share this.
Every Friday morning at the office, I get to witness to the most PRECIOUS thing. The cutest elderly couple pull up every morning to the salon across the street from me, and the little old man drops off his little old lady.
Because I apparently am an unabashed creeper, I can see her tottering around at different stages of her haircut, with her wet hair slicked back, getting her hair dried under the dryer, etc.
But the most precious part is that nearing the end of the little old lady's appointment, the husband goes inside to get her! And EVERY time they walk out to the car hand-in-hand. And he never fails to open and shut the door for her. So cute. I love old people. As long as they are not on the road driving 10 miles an hour, that is.
They remind me of the adorable little couple from the movie Up. By the way, who else LOVES that movie?! So sad, but so good.
Unfortunately, since I don't carry a telephonic zoom camera with me to work so I can creep on people from my desk, the above movie still from here will have to do.

Counter Boy Grief

Saturday I was so HAPPY that I was able to go thrifting with my younger brother, Adam (10 yrs. old) and we found some pretty awesome "pre-loved" treasures!

And this super fabulous record was one of them. I love love LOVE old things, and especially old movies, so when I saw this, I immediately snagged it.

With my arms laden with a TON of heavy stuff, and since of COURSE I was not done shopping, I went to the front counter to have them hold my stuff. (Because, seriously, who likes pushing around carts? Yeah, definitely not me.) And here is the conversation that ensued between me and the front counter boy.

Counter Boy: "Oh, you're getting the Oklahoma album..."

Me: "Yeah! I'm so excited!"

Counter Boy:(mournfully)"Ohh... yeah... I was thinking about getting that for my Mom. She lives in Oklahoma and would sure love it...."

And this is where any normal, tenderhearted human being would offer the record to this sad, tragic-faced kid. I mean, people! The look on his face, you would have thought I just ran over his favorite dog, or ate his last cookie, or refused his marriage proposal! Well, me, being the fierce and ruthless shopper that I am, replied with:

Me:...(insert awkward laugh) "Sorry!"

and I proceeded to head upstairs to look for more ~~crap~~ goodies.

I am horrible, right? I mean, who does that?!

Well, apparently me.

And then, when we were purchasing all our awesome finds, the Counter Boy said, AGAIN, how much his Mom would have appreciated receiving the record. And THEN he said he would have to CALL her and tell her that it was gone!! I mean, good grief, kid! Seriously, he knew how to guilt-trip!

At this point, I was feeling pretty bad, but not quite bad enough to offer the record to him, so, I said "I feel bad ( insert another awkward laugh)", to which Counter Boy replied, mournfully of course, "Ohh... (LONG PAUSE) it's okay."

Well, you're darn right it's okay - you annoying Counter Boy! It's for sale, and I'm buying it! Ha!

Haha, I really must be heartless, because, while typing this story up, I have been laughing like a hysteric hyena. And if you never read anything here again, I don't blame you.

It's a big day!

Today I am finally beginning something I have always wanted to do! And that is start (and hopefully successfully maintain) a blog. And this time around, not for a class project! (Go here to get a taste of my first blogging venture for a reporting class.)
Why? Partly because I know I will enjoy it, and partly because I think it will be a great way to motivate myself to be productive over the summer. I'm excited! And since I am a communications student headed into my senior year at OSU, I figured it's about time I started communicating.

So, what to expect on my blog?!
GOOD QUESTION! ahaha...
Mostly, whatever I feel like. Ha.
Okay, seriously though, you should prepare yourself for plenty of fashion, (well, my interpretation of it at least!) food, and general fun happenings with family and friends (like my alliteration?!). And yes, there will be photos.

So, if you don't know me yet, you will! For starters, I am a new media communications student with a hearty appetite for fashion, food, and all things new media! And this blog is about what I like. Including the people I love, the food I eat, and the clothes I wear.
